With the prosperity and security also inevitably  of  interior styles and an irresistible temptation to go over the top: a general statement, but a confirmation of the story. In the twentieth century, we look back to see no farther than the 1980s to provide proof of that. If we still continue to withdraw - until the middle of the nineteenth century - we find perhaps a better example.Victoria was on the British throne, was her kingdom in a very pretty and the fruits of the industrial revolution churning were estimated by a fast growing middle class. In the "workshop of the world", as England was known then, that wealth through trade with the colonies. Added to this new-found prosperity and security, a monarch with strong feelings about home and family, and you have all the back-ground ingredients in the Victorian style interior.

The preference was for classic styles in decline, but without strong, new fashion-directional pad, the only way was to look back and revive the previously popular interior issues (this is also paralleled in the 1980s as a shabby-chic house eclecticism has been the latest fad). Gothic, Elizabethan, Oriental, Scottish barons, Egyptian and Rococo - these were among the many styles that are the Victorians somewhat indiscriminately mixed. In the interpretation of the Victorian style, now you have the choice between these different Victorian interior design styles within one room jumbling or perhaps concentrating on only one topic in each room.
